Ever pulled a shirt or dress out of the wash and thought: “Wait… did this shrink?” or “Why did the color fade so fast?”

Chances are, the care label was trying to warn you.

Most people ignore laundry symbols because they look technical or confusing. But those small icons on clothing tags are actually one of the simplest ways to protect your clothes from shrinking, fading, stretching, or getting ruined too soon.

The good news: once you learn the basics, you don’t really need to guess anymore.

This guide breaks down laundry symbols in a clear, practical way so you can actually use them—not just decode them.

What Do Laundry Symbols Mean?

Laundry symbols are standardized icons printed on clothing care labels. They tell you how to properly. Once you learn the basics, you can quickly scan a label and know exactly how to treat a garment.

Washing

  • Wash Tub with Temperature: When you see a number inside the wash tub, it indicates the maximum washing temperature.

Rule of thumb: lower temperatures are safer for most clothes and help preserve color.

  • Hand-in Wash Tub: A hand inside the wash tub means: wash gently by hand only.

This is common for delicate fabrics like silk, lace, or fine wool. Machine washing can damage or deform these items.

Drying

  • Square with a Circle Inside: You can tumble dry this item. One dot means low heat; three dots mean high heat.

  • Line Above the Square: Air dry is best; gentle on delicate fabrics!

Bleaching

  1. Empty Triangle: Bleach away! It’s safe to use.

  2. Crossed Triangle: No bleach here; stick to non-bleach detergents.

Ironing

  • Iron with Dots: The dots show the heat level (one for low, two for medium, three for high).

  • Crossed Iron: Skip the ironing on this one—it’s best left as is.

Professional Care

Circle with a Letter: A professional dry cleaner will know exactly how to care for this garment.

Why Does This Matter?

When you follow these symbols, you give your clothes the care they need. It helps them last longer, brightens colors, and avoids accidental mishaps like shrinking or tearing.
